My current oil painting commission WIPs. Studying for a new qualification so it’s all quiet on the artistic front here.

Indian Balasm
Indian Balasm is an escapee from gardens and is taking over from native species on river banks. It’s just reached the edge of our field, where the spring meets the river. It’s such a shame to take it out because it’s beautiful. It also starts to go limp almost immediately, but I shoved some in […]
Sketching on the go!
I’ve just been away to London for three days and I took some sketching implements with me. As a follower of Liz Steel, Teoh Yi Chie and Path Southern Pierce (warning, you’ll walk away with a new foundation pen and a portable palette) I gathered up my materials and decided i would make use of the train ride down to […]
Pebeo Mixed Media
When googling ‘mixed media’ Pebeo Mixed Media always comes up. So I bought a mixed media set! It was supposed to contain ceramic, fantasy moon, prisme fantasy and vitrail transparent, but instead of three ceramic paints, I got 3 duplicate vitrail paints instead, so I cant comment on them. Generally the Vitrail is […]
The right frame of mind
Waiting for inspiration to grab you by the throat, drag you to the easel and produce a beautiful painting, is a fallacy. If I don’t put the time and the work in I won’t get improve and chipping away at it a little at a time is more helpful over all (more on that later). […]
Make Good Art
It really helps me. I hope it helps you. Of course it doesn’t hurt that I’m a massive Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett fan. I found the link to the video on Kiri Leonard’s YouTube channel. (http://kirileonard.com) also well worth checking out!
Important things I learned in Staithes
Block in dark tones, simplify shapes and build details from there keep brush strokes lively (blending not really needed) don’t get caught up in unnecessary detail details don’t need to be precise just an impression you don’t need every colour under the sun but warm pale yellow puts the sunshine in, and cerulean blue […]
5 reasons to go on a painting holiday
I might have mentioned that I went on a painting holiday, now two weeks ago, and I thought I’d share what made me take the plunge, sign up, and hand over my hard earned cash. Meet new like minded friends. I did have the mick taken out of me for saying I’d signed up […]
En plein air with Haidee-jo Summers at Staithes
I went on a plein air painting workshop with Haidee-jo Summers in Staithes, North Yorkshire. I managed to complete five paintings and have one unfinished due to watching Haidee demonstrate and an oncoming migraine. We started off on Friday morning with tonal value paintings. Lots of squinting all around! The hard part was trying […]
The Gap
This is what I’ve been struggling with my whole life. My best paintings have been created when my sole goal was just to paint. Worry about nothing else, and out of the all the paintings I made, some would be better than others.
