Even though this isn’t a brilliant painting, it’s one of my favourites. It’s one were I finally started learning the value of values. 😉 I quickly painted this before scurrying back to the hall as the rain came, and then spent a rainy afternoon fixing the bright colours I’d put in on the hill.
Painted at the same time as the pink geraniums. I’ve even helpfully noted down my colour palette. I fell out with yellow ochre at a young age, and had a long relationship with raw sienna. Now I’m very happy with Micheal hardings transport french yellow ochre.
I said I had a road phase, snapping photos when sat in the passenger seat. What I really like is bright colours, and green. Looking at all these old paintings I am wondering why it took so long to learn values….
I have painted Horsley Hall before. This ones in watercolour, with some white gouache to touch up the snow. I really hope this is just a blurry photo…

I can’t remember what year I painted this but it was before 2012 and from the quality of the photo, before 2011. I had a road and moors faze. This was painted in oils on canvas and was bought as a present for a family member living in London.
I’ve just got back from holiday. I went to Mayrhofen skiing. I didn’t injure myself this year, but my ski school group was small, allowing the instructor to ski our boots off. I am so wrecked I could barely lift my suitcase into the transfer bus. Skiing is a full body sport. Definitely need to […]
