Artist & Tutor
When searching for photos of a more resent work, I came across these two commissions from 2011. They did make me cringe, but they were the best I could do at the time, and were a stepping stone to the best I can do now. Holly. She was so scared of the dark her dad […]
I used the same method of painting, and the same colour palette but I painted this based off one of my photos, and made it my own. Looking at my current painting practises I’ve developed my colour/tonal skills more this this painting, but I still use a credit card if I find my rendering of […]
Ive seen a lot of discussion about whether you should copy other artists work. At school and at any art classes i’ve attended we were always taught by copying an artists painting, do one of your own in that style. And no, the one you’ve just painted is not your image by copyright. I did […]
I used to have a camera that had no video capabilities. I tried to remember to take sequential photos of my paintings. I would always forget after a certain point. But here are the ones I found of my painting of Sam and Aya. It was painted in the spare room, using the square method […]
It’s a Mabef M105 Pochade box with the wooden tripod, as the Pochade box is too heavy for my camera tripod. I got this to replace a cheap french easel I’d bought off eBay. Anything I stored in the box would start falling out when it was closed and tipped upright to be carried and […]
I’ve done more to this one. I’ve developed an aversion to the texture of canvas. I shall have to gesso and sand it down before I start any more.
She’s finished! Took me quite a while as she got put on hold for commissions and when I was sick. I also had an attack of I’m going to mess this up and put off this final finishing touches. There was also the emotional component as Aya is sadly no longer with us. She was […]
The best part of finishing an oil painting is the varnishing. All the juicy colour fades as the oil paint cures, but a swipe of varnish brings it back to life. I’m using Gamvar here, as I just have to wait for the painting to be touch dry before you can apply. Six months is […]
Noah’s a horse with no teeth, who loves his chin tickled and eating. He’s a dedicated eater. And why yes, he knows he is handsome. Hopefully this painting will do him justice. I took a lot of time getting the shadows mapped out and debating where to put place Noah. Currently I’m feeling good about […]
I am really enjoying landscapes in three portraits at the moment… I got a little carried away blending the sky, but I started out with good intentions as I didn’t like how the old paint marks showed through on the previous set I did. I’ve been watching Andrew Tischler on youtube. His under painting is […]
